Call for Participation: WG-124 Spectrum
ACTIVITIES AND PARTICIPATION
EUROCAE WG-124 and RTCA SC-242 are seeking additional expert participation in the creation of a Report and a Guidance document for use in crafting Radio Frequency standards for use in the aviation industry. The key expertise needed is for designers of the various types of RF avionics equipment, so that the guidance material reflects this perspective in the context of spectrum compatibility and efficiency. The intent is to ensure that the guidance is practical and implementable by the RF system engineers. Participation will mainly be to support development of ED-XXX Spectrum Guidance for Developers of Standards for Aviation Wireless Systems. Working Group sessions are ordinarily held weekly and on a remote participation basis, and in-person plenary sessions are held 2 to 3 times annually, rotating between Washington D.C and Brussels, or another European location.
The EUROCAE Working Group is also seeking nominations for a Secretary, and we invite you to consider your interest in such a role.
THE WORKING GROUP
EUROCAE Working Group 124 kicked-off joint work with RTCA Special Committee 242 in March 2022 and is working on ‘Spectrum Guidance for Developers of Standards for Aviation Wireless Systems’ (ED-xxx) to ensure that the radio frequency (RF) characteristics of aeronautical Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) systems use the spectrum efficiently while respecting the necessary safety margins. The Guidance will support the aviation industry in working collaboratively with non-aviation spectrum users, ensuring the safe integration of new technologies that are so important to the advancement of our collective industries.
In November 2023, the joint group published EUROCAE ER-028/RTCA RR-001 ’Survey of Radio Frequency (RF) Performance Standards for Aeronautical RF Systems’. The group is also working on a ‘Report for Aeronautical RF Systems their Regulatory Framework and Operational Consideration’. The report will be the reference for non-aerospace spectrum stakeholders, to support effective and successful discussions with the aerospace industry, and to inform Civil Aviation Authorities and ICAO.
WG-124 and SC-242 additional technical standards need more input from stakeholders in writing and implementing technical requirements.
JOIN AND DRIVE THE STANDARDS FOR AVIATION
The next in-person meetings and plenary sessions are scheduled 27-29 February at EUROCONTROL in Brussels, Belgium. If your company is interested in a contribution to these activities or if you have any questions, please email mark.watson@eurocae.net or rmorrison@rtca.org.
This Call for Participation will close on 22/02/2024.
