Call for Industry Interest for Vision Systems in Innovative Aerial Services (IAS) within WG-79

Background

EUROCAE WG-79 Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS), Synthetic Vision System (SVS) and RTCA SC-213 have spent about 17 years developing operational frameworks and regulatory documents supporting vision-based operations for airborne platforms. They have successfully guided vision technologies from conceptualisation to certified deployment, achieving global regulatory approvals that allow the use of vision systems instead of natural vision in very low visibility conditions. In 2019, they published ED-255, establishing the MASPS for a Combined Vision Guidance System for Rotorcraft Operations. This standard aimed to enhance situational awareness and provide operational benefits for Combined Vision Systems in helicopter operations.

New Proposal

We are currently working to expand ED-255 to define vision systems operational credit, initially focusing on helicopters' low visibility operations. As we progress, we are broadening the scope to include Innovative Aerial Services (IAS) low visibility operations, in cooperation with EUROCAE IAS Working Groups. Given the relevance of these technologies to multiple Working Groups (WG-105, WG-112, WG-63…), we propose a collaborative framework where WG-79, with supporting regulatory authorities, develop best practices and regulatory guidelines for all relevant platforms.

Looking for Industry Support

We are looking for experts in vision-based aerospace operations and IAS including vision systems and avionics suppliers, airframers, airport systems and infrastructure organizations, regulators, IAS experts, etc, to help define and develop operational and certification support guidelines for vision systems relevant to new entrants. Vision systems are critical for the safe navigation and operation of airborne platforms, facilitating detection and avoidance of threats, navigation to landing areas (airstrips, vertiports, landing zones), and incursion-free landing and taxi operations in both clear weather and low visibility conditions. These technologies are applicable to both UAS and VTOL. They are relevant for the platform itself as well as for remote monitors or operators.
